The Living Christmas Crib of Montenero di Bisaccia, which has reached its thirtieth edition, is one of the most characteristic events for Montenero and Molise inhabitants’. Every year, it takes place from December 24th to January 6th at the Neolithic Caves in via G. Garibaldi.
The Living Christmas Crib was organized for the first time in 1984 by a group of local people led by pastor Don Nino Zappitelli. Since the first edition, the Living Christmas Crib was set up at the Neolithic Caves dating back to 10,000 B. C. And, with the passing of years and the consensus and enthusiasm increase, the area of the representation has greatly expanded, giving new scenarios. It is a very important event that every year involves many volunteers and has managed to create a strong link between territory, traditions, myths and legends. The place and the commitment of many Montenero inhabitants’ represent, in an evocative way, the evangelical story of the Holy Family, who, finding no hospitality in Bethlehem, moved on its periphery to look for refuge in a cave used a s a stable. And what better place than the sandstone caves?
During Christmas time, Montenero its Living Christmas Crib become a destination for numerous visitors coming from all over Italy. The scenery, costumes and many protagonists immerse the spectators in a unique place, especially when it is accompanied by the fall of snowflakes.
