Sinarca Tower

Architecture · Termoli

Sinarca Tower is located on the route SS 16, seafront Lungomare Amerigo Vespucci. On Molise Coast, during the past, several towers were constructed in order to create a defensive system. Today, this tower is a restaurant.

There are several sight towers in Termoli against continual attacks on the coast. Just think the time of Saracens and Turkish, who have attacked the entire coastline. All the towers are simple, without decorative elements, with a square base, with a pyramid trunk volume and holes to throw stones, rocks or other defense material against the assailants. The interior was constituted by two superimposed environments, both covered with barrel vaults, the staircase was planned on the ground floor, the armament on the upper floor. From the ground floor could be a staircase connecting with the next floor, but often this presence was removed for defensive reasons.

Sinarca Tower dates back to the 14th century. It does not have a specific architectural style. It was destroyed during Turkish attack in 1566. The only weapons inside the tower were the sickle and the emery (marine artillery), the tools used to signal invasions were straw and mirrors. With the help of the mirrors, from this tower to Palermo it was possible to communicate in 2 hours and 50 minutes by, of course, pre-established codes.
Sinarca Tower is also called Saracen Tower. Until few years ago it was abandoned. Today it is a restaurant.
